Big Ambitions Mods: How Steam Workshop Support Works

Updated 2026-09-08 · Last verified 2026-09-08 · Steam Big Ambitions

Big Ambitions has official mod support, it lives on the Steam Workshop, and it arrived in Early Access 0.11 on 18 June 2026, about ten weeks before the 1.0 release. Mods are subscribed to through the Workshop rather than dropped into a game folder, and since that build no third-party loader is involved.

That is the short answer. The longer answer is that this is the thinnest-documented major feature in the game, and it is worth saying so before going further.

What this page is. Every claim below comes from Hovgaard Games' own Steam announcements, the Steam store API, or the official forum, checked on 8 September 2026. Where a question has no published answer, this page says "no source" instead of filling the gap. The community wiki has no article on mods, modding, the Workshop or blueprints at all, confirmed by enumerating all 550 of its mainspace articles, so there is no second-hand mod documentation to copy even if we wanted to.

Mod support is official, and it is newer than most guides assume

Modding sat on Hovgaard Games' long-term list for nearly three years before it shipped. The studio's "Studio & Future Insights" post of 19 August 2023 grouped "modding support" with production factories, new cities, airports and sailable boats as things that "are no longer hopes and dreams, but long-term plans". Factories arrived in EA 0.6 and Industry City in EA 0.9. Mods arrived last.

DateBuild or versionWhat officially happened
19 Aug 2023Pre-EA 0.3 postModding support named as a long-term plan, no date given
30 Aug 2023EA 0.3Blueprints ship with an integrated Steam Workshop page. Not mods
30 Sep 2025EA 0.9Blueprints can be edited and re-uploaded without creating a new Workshop entry
5 Nov 2025EA 0.9 Build 3226Fix: blueprints failed to load if you unsubscribed on the Workshop while the item was in your library
3 Jun 2026EA 0.10 Build 3468A patch shipped purely so incoming mods would not break existing EA 0.10 blueprints
4 Jun 2026EA 0.11 previewMod support enters the experimental branch
18 Jun 2026EA 0.11 "The Workshop Awakens"Mod support goes live for everyone
28 Aug 20261.0No mention of mods or the Workshop anywhere in the changelog

The developer's own framing of the 18 June release is worth quoting, because it settles the "is there official support" question outright: "Let's talk about Mods - you've asked for them. Some people have even started making them. We've seen the posts, ranging from multiplayer to analytic tools to fun new features. Well, it's time to officially integrate mod support into the game. No more third-party add-ons just to load the mod. The Steam workshop is ready, so you can start creating immediately."

Two things follow from that sentence. Mods existed before EA 0.11 and required an external loader, so any guide describing a manual loader install is describing a pre-June-2026 game. And the officially supported channel is the Workshop, singular. No official post names another one.

Where mods live and how they get in

The Steam store page for app 1331550 lists Steam Workshop among its categories, alongside Single-player, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing, verified against the Steam API on 8 September 2026. The Workshop hub itself is the one Hovgaard Games linked from its own announcements.

Installation follows the standard Workshop model: subscribe to an item and Steam places it in your library for the game to load. The clearest first-party evidence for that model is a bug fix from EA 0.9 Build 3226 on 5 November 2025, which describes blueprints failing "if you unsubscribed to the blueprint on the workshop while it was in your library". Subscription state, not a file path, is what the game reads.

What no official post contains is a step-by-step install walkthrough, a mods folder location, or a load-order system. If you see a Big Ambitions guide describing manual file placement, it is either describing the pre-0.11 third-party loader era or inventing detail.

Making and publishing a mod

The pipeline the studio documented on 18 June 2026 has two halves, and both are first-party:

  • Authoring. "We've created a sample pack of simple Unity mods and tools that connect directly to your copy of Big Ambitions, giving you a jump-start on creating your own mods." The game is a Unity title and the starter material is Unity-based.
  • Publishing. "Once you're done, add them to the workshop through our in-game uploader." Publishing happens inside the game, not through the Steam web interface.

That is the complete official documentation. There is no published scripting API reference, no modding wiki maintained by the studio, and no versioned SDK release notes. Anyone telling you what a Big Ambitions mod can and cannot touch is inferring it.

What kinds of mods exist

Here the honest answer is a small one. The only official categorisation of Big Ambitions mods is the studio's own description of what players were already building before support landed: multiplayer, analytic tools, and "fun new features". By 11 June 2026, a week into the preview branch, the studio noted that "the workshop has already begun to fill up with new mods".

Nobody has published a survey of the Workshop catalogue, this site included. Rather than invent a taxonomy, here is what is verifiable about the two things the Workshop actually hosts.

Workshop contentSinceWhat it isVersion-locked?
BlueprintsEA 0.3, 30 Aug 2023A saved interior layout for one business, installable through an Interior Installation FirmYes. Same building size and layout only, and EA 0.11 added a filter by game version
ModsEA 0.11, 18 Jun 2026Unity-based additions loaded by the game itselfNo official statement

The blueprint and mod systems are separate features that share one Workshop hub, which is the single most common source of confusion on this keyword. A blueprint is not a mod. Blueprints only apply to a building of the same code and layout, so an A1 blueprint will not load into an A2, which is covered on our real estate page.

Version compatibility, which is where mods actually break

This is the part that matters, because Big Ambitions spent roughly three years in Early Access and its economy moved repeatedly. Compatibility problems around mods and blueprints show up in the official notes four separate times in five weeks.

BuildDateThe compatibility event
EA 0.10 Build 34683 Jun 2026Shipped specifically to stop new mods causing "problems between new mods and EA 0.10 blueprints"
EA 0.11 preview 352415 Jun 2026"Fixed achievements weren't all firing due to some mods changes"
EA 0.11 preview 353215 Jun 2026"Fix blueprints and mods weren't working on Macs"
EA 0.11 Build 353823 Jun 2026"Fixed some blueprint compatibility issues from EA 0.10 blueprints"

The single most important warning is one the studio bolded in both the preview and the full EA 0.11 announcement: "Due to changes required for mod support, opening the Blueprints panel in EA 0.11 will update your blueprints. Updated blueprints cannot be opened in previous versions of the game." That upgrade is one-way and it triggers on opening the panel, not on saving. If you are deliberately running an older build, do not open the blueprint panel in 0.11 or later with blueprints you still need.

EA 0.11 also added a blueprint filter by game version, which is a direct admission from the studio that Workshop items age out. Use it.

For selecting which build you run, the studio documented the route in its 4 June 2026 preview post: right-click Big Ambitions in Steam, choose Properties, then "Game Versions & Betas", then pick from the version list. That is the official mechanism. Which versions currently appear in that list is not something any source states, so check it yourself rather than trusting a screenshot from June.

Does any of this still hold in 1.0?

Officially, unknown, and that gap is worth stating plainly rather than papering over.

Mod support shipped in EA 0.11. The 1.0 changelog of 14 August 2026, the launch announcement of 28 August, and the Build 3672/3674 patch of 1 September contain no mod or Workshop entries whatsoever. The only blueprint-related lines in the entire 1.0 changelog are two bug fixes: cash register capacity not displaying in the Blueprint Creator for nightclubs, and the camera failing to zoom in-game if you had opened the blueprint creator first.

So the feature was plainly not removed, and the Workshop category is still on the store page. What has never been published is whether a mod authored against EA 0.11 loads correctly in 1.0. Given that 1.0 reworked banking, tax and energy and added a seventh neighbourhood, a mod that touches any of those systems has an obvious reason to break. Read each Workshop item's own description for a version note. See our 1.0 changes page for the full list of what moved.

Open questions

These are unanswered by every source available, and this page will be updated when any of them is answered rather than guessed at.

QuestionStatus
Do EA 0.11 mods run in 1.0?No official statement. Check per item
Do mods disable Steam achievements? No official statement either way. The only related line is a developer-side bug fix
Is there a scripting API or SDK reference? Not published. Only the Unity sample pack is documented
How many mods are on the Workshop? No count published by anyone, including us
Are mods supported on macOS?Windows and macOS are the supported platforms, no Linux build. A 15 June 2026 fix specifically restored blueprints and mods on Macs, so they are intended to work there
Is there a mod load order or conflict system? Not documented

How large is the scene

Small, and honestly so. The official Discourse forum at forum.bigambitionsgame.com runs a dedicated Mods board carrying 14 topics as of 8 September 2026, against 491 in General and 351 in Implemented Suggestions. The studio's own announcements also point players at the Steam discussions and the game's subreddit for support.

That is a real scene rather than a busy one, which is consistent with mod support being ten weeks old at 1.0 and with the wider pattern of 1.0 content still being undigested: several 1.0 achievements sit at a 0.1 per cent global unlock rate, covered on our achievements page.

What this page will not tell you

Two deliberate omissions, both for the same reason.

There is no list of "best Big Ambitions mods" here. Ranking Workshop items would mean rating things nobody has version-tested against 1.0, on a hub whose contents no source has surveyed, ten weeks after the system launched. Ask again when someone has actually checked.

There is also no instruction for installing anything from outside the Steam Workshop. The Workshop is the only channel Hovgaard Games documents, and it is the only one this site describes.

For context on which build a given guide was written against, our Early Access versus 1.0 comparison sets out what changed in each update, the roadmap page covers what the studio has and has not committed to next, and the starter guide covers the unmodded game. If you have hit a claim about this game that smells wrong, the myths page collects the ones we have been able to disprove against first-party sources, including the widely copied figure of five neighbourhoods when 1.0 has seven.

Frequently asked questions

Does Big Ambitions have official mod support?

Yes. Hovgaard Games added it in Early Access 0.11, 'The Workshop Awakens', on 18 June 2026, and the Steam store page still lists Steam Workshop as a game category as of 8 September 2026. The official wording was 'it's time to officially integrate mod support into the game. No more third-party add-ons just to load the mod.' Before that build, mods existed but needed an external loader.

Where do you download Big Ambitions mods?

The Steam Workshop hub for app 1331550, which the developer linked directly from its own announcements. No official post names any other distribution channel, and no official post describes an approved way to install a mod obtained from anywhere else. The same Workshop hub also carries blueprints, which are store layouts rather than mods.

Do mods work in Big Ambitions 1.0?

No official post says either way. Mod support shipped in EA 0.11 on 18 June 2026 and nothing in the 1.0 changelog of 14 August 2026, the launch announcement of 28 August, or the Build 3672/3674 patch of 1 September mentions mods or the Workshop at all. The feature was not removed, but individual mods built against 0.11 have no published compatibility statement, so check each item's own version notes.

Do mods disable achievements in Big Ambitions?

Nothing official has been published on this. The only related line in the whole update history is a preview-build fix on 15 June 2026 reading 'Fixed achievements weren't all firing due to some mods changes', and that describes the developer's own mod-support code breaking achievement triggers, not a deliberate policy of switching achievements off for modded saves. Treat the question as open.

Are blueprints the same thing as mods?

No. Blueprints are saved interior layouts for a business, added in EA 0.3 on 30 August 2023, almost three years before mod support. They share the Steam Workshop hub with mods, which is why the two get confused. A blueprint only applies to a building of the same size and layout, so an A1 blueprint will not load into an A2.

How do you make a mod for Big Ambitions?

Hovgaard Games published a sample pack of simple Unity mods and tools that connect directly to your copy of the game, and finished mods are published through an in-game uploader rather than a web form. The announcement of 18 June 2026 is the only official documentation of that pipeline; there is no published SDK reference, API listing or scripting guide.
